Cell Division - Meiosis

Meiosis is one of two types of cell division.

  • Produces four new cells, each having only one set of chromosomes.
  • Produces only reproductive cells.
  • Occurs in nine stages.

First meiotic division

  • In the first stage of meiosis, the cell undergoes a simple mitotic division that produces two identical cells, each with a complete set of chromosomes.

Second meiotic division

  • In the second stage of meiosis, the two new identical cells produced in the first stage undergo reduction and division, producing two new cells with half of the complete set of chromosomes of the original parent cell.
