Cell Division - Mitosis

Cell division forms new cells. Mitosis is one of two types of cell division.

  • Produces two new cells, each having two sets of chromosomes.
  • Produces all cells except reproductive cells.
  • Produces cells identical to the parent cell.
  • Results in the growth and repair of tissue.
  • Occurs in five stages.

Interphase

  • Cell involved in normal cell processes.

Prophase

  • Each chromosome is copied.
  • Chromosome pairs attached at middle.
  • Nuclear membrane disappears.

Metaphase

  • Chromosome pairs line up.
  • Spindle fibers attach to the center of each chromosome pair.

Anaphase

  • Spindle fibers pull apart the chromosome pairs.
  • Two identical sets of chromosomes are pulled to either side of the cell.

Telophase

  • Spindle fibers disappear.
  • Nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromosomes.
  • Cell membrane and cytoplasm pinch in to form two new identical cells.

Interphase

  • Two new cells become involved in normal cell processes.
