Cell Transportation

Cell transportation involves moving materials in and out of the cell, as well as throughout the cell. Passive and active transport are two types of cell transportation.

Passive Transport:

  • Transport that requires no energy.
  • There are two forms of passive transport: diffusion and osmosis.
  • Diffusion is passive transport that occurs when things move from greater to lesser concentration.
  • Osmosis is the passive movement of water through a semipermeable membrane.

Active Transport:

  • Transport that requires energy.
  • One type of active transport uses special carrier molecules in the cell membrane.
  • The carrier molecule "grabs" other molecules outside the cell and pulls them into the cell, where they are released into the cytoplasm.
