Centipedes and Millipedes
Centipedes and millipedes represent two more classes of arthropods. They are characterized by having long bodies that are separated into many different segments. While centipedes and millepedes look similar, they have distinct characteristics that make them very different.
Characteristics of Centipedes
- Centipede means "hundred legged."
- Flattened body.
- One pair of legs per body segment.
- First pair of legs modified into poison claws that inject poison to kill prey.
- Move quickly.
- Two pairs of antennae.
- Breathe through spiracles.
- Are predators on insects, earthworms, and slugs.
Characteristics of Millipedes
- Millipede means "thousand legged."
- Cylindrical body.
- Two pairs of legs per body segment.
- Move slowly.
- Two pairs of antennae.
- Breathe through spiracles.
- Eat mainly dead vegetation.
