Ever been stung by a jellyfish like animal while swimming in the ocean? This type of animal belongs to to the phylum Cnidaria and are distinguished by a hollow body and mouth surrounded by tentacles. Types of animals in this phylum are jellyfish, hydras, anemones, and coral.

Characteristics of Cnidarians

  • Hollow sac-like body that occurs in two forms:
  • a vase-shaped body called a polyp, or
  • a bell-shaped body called a medusa.
  • Cells are specialized into tissues.
  • Only one opening into the body.
  • Tentacles with stinging cells.
